Citizen Science School

Katherin Wagenknecht & Silke Voigt-Heucke: (Re)presentations

A characteristic of Citizen Science is the involvement of different actors in the research process: researcher, citizens, experts and other stakeholders come together in a research process.  The first contact is usually the project presentation on one of the common platforms, which describes the idea of the project, the thematic focus, as well as the way the collaboration of citizens and scientists is organized and thought about.

In this workshop, we take a closer look at descriptions of selected citizen science projects. Besides texts, we also aim to look at visualizations, images or graphs that may be included in the presentation of a citizen science project. We study the project presentations along several questions: What form of participation is expressed in the project conceptions, which ideas of joint work and research are formulated, and what are the assumptions about participation, collaboration, and science are documented in them? How do project leaders portray themselves? How are citizens addressed and how are opportunities for participation described? How is the topic/question presented?

The goal of this content-analytical approach is to find out which interpretive horizons shape the project conceptions: While some see the participation of citizens merely as a means of obtaining data, others emphasize the active character of participation. Join this workshop and you will never again just “read” a project description!
