Jaqui Goldin: Citizen Science: Research Integrity, Ethics and the SDGs

In this interactive workshop, we will adress research integrity and ethics in the context of selected SDGs. How are these topics relevant when conducting citizen science, what is ethical behaviour in the citizen science context, and how do we maintain research integrity in the field? Participants will be introduced to a citizen science project in the Limpopo Province, South Africa. In this project, citizen scientists are monitoring groundwater levels in wells in remote rural settings as well as measuring rainfall and transmitting this data through a smartphone app online.  We consider the SDGs and turn in particular to SDGs 5, 6, 10, 16 and 17. Through these discussions, participants will gain knowledge on participatory research methods that are critical with regard to research integrity and ethical behaviour when working with citizen scientists.
